Bucks Are Back

It's that time of year again, the bucks are coming back to visit our lovely does. One of our guests Ed Matthews took a picture of this young buck last weekend. We have had some with larger racks the previous weekends, but they did not come around for Ed to get a picture of them. Come to Biscuit Hill to see if you can capture (on camera) one of the big guys. The weather is great, lots to do, and of course a comfortable, relaxing stay at the B&B will kick start your busy holiday season.

Alpaca Feeding

Well, Nougat & Choco were very good boys this past weekend. They did their cute poses for the guests, and enjoyed our company as much as we enjoyed theirs. This picture just says it all. The Alpacas are really enjoying the cooler weather, and so are we. Biscuit Hill is full for this weekend, but has one room available for next weekend. So if you can get away, come see us. I am also testing out some new Fall menu items, yum, yum!

Oct. 22 & 23 is Gruene's Annual Texas Clay Festival. Attendees enjoy all the excitement of a festival, and have a chance to watch demonstrations AND see beautiful clay art.

October 27 The Grapevine will be having live jazz along with the special wine of the week tasting.

Garrison Brothers Bourbon Distillery

Well Fans, Dean & I went to the bourbon distillery outside Blanco this past Sunday, and had a great time!! Stephanie, our tour guide let us know we would be experiencing something like what you would see on the History Channel show "How Things Are Made". As promised we were able to taste the different stages of the process of making a high end bourbon. Yum, yum!!!! We also learned that Bourbon is the National Spirit of the United States, like tequila is the national spirit of Mexico. You do get thirsty, so they provide you with bottled water and/or local beer from a Blanco Micro Brewery, since they can't sell the bourbon on site. If you want to try a really high end bourbon, you can find Garrison Brothers Bourbon at some liquor stores through out Texas, and at Costco. They are a small operation, so there are limited quantities out there. I will be looking in our area soon, and they will have another release in November. I recommend you join their blog to keep up with what is going on there. Hill Country Bourbon Distillery

I know I just sent out a post yesterday, but this couldn't wait until next week. I got a card inviting us to do a "Sit and Sip" at the Garrison Brothers Bourbon Distillery outside Blanco. They are the only "legal" bourbon distillery in Texas since prohibition. They hand bottle every oak aged drop that has been distilled in 100% copper kettles. This is fine smooth bourbon, not the "burn your throat" bourbon, it is meant for sipping, not mixing with soda. "Sit and Sip" Tours run Wednesday thru Sunday 10, Noon, 2, & 4 pm. Reservations are recommended (830) 392-0246. Even if bourbon is not your thing, the tour of the facility and learning how bourbon is made will be a treat. Canyon Lake - Guadalupe River

Our son and daughter-in-law took us out on Canyon Lake Saturday in their boat. I took many, many boat pics, but I just had to share this one. It was soooo different. It was a houseboat with live palm trees growing in large urns. They also had a huge flat screen TV and many other fun things on it as well. We were ready to jump on ourselves.

On Sunday Dean & I took Willie and Waylon on a walk down the Guadalupe River trail. This is a favouite of our guests as well as locals. If you like to hike in a secnic area, check it out when you are in our area.

Alpacas New Summer Hair Cut

Because the Alpaca's coat is so dense it has to be cut back like a sheeps every year. That being said, they look a little different than they did in my previous posts. However, you can now see their beautiful eyes, and they will be much happier when the Summer heat hits. I am sure I will hear your collective "Awwww" when you see them.

Quincey Trenthan is a professional photographer out of San Antonio. She stayed at Biscuit Hill B&B this past weekend, and took this adorable shot of Choco eating his favorite snack, a dried apricot. He looks soooo happy! As you can see, he also likes to roll in his hay. Guests can feed the Alpaca boys every morning, and take them for a walk around the property if they like as well.

Hill Country Wine & Food Festival

This past weekend, there was lots to do in the Hill Country. No one could do them all, so even though we had guests at Biscuit Hill, we were able to slip away and do a couple. I blogged yesterday about our trip to Dry Comal Creek Vineyard & Winery's Dogs at the winery event to meet Santa, and then on Sunday the Hill Country Wine & Food Festival was held just outside Wimberley this year. It was a little chilli, it is December, but everyone had a great time. Six well know restaurants from Austin, and several vineyards from around the world as well as a micro-brewer had booths, and there was live music to entertain us while we ate and drank to our hearts content. I have a video up on our Biscuit Hill facebook page, so go take a look. But for now this is my favorite still shot of the trip. This little boy's father was carving the pig and he looked really interested. Maybe he will follow up in his father's footsteps.

Hill Country Events

The Hill Country this past weekend was a buzz of activity. We were able to share some of them with our pups Willie and Waylon. Dry Comal Creek Vineyard and Winery hosted a doggy day with Santa and lots of DCC fans brought their "best friends" to meet Santa. All four legged and two legged guests had a great time. I will be blogging about our last Sunday visit to the Hill Country Food & Wine Festival before the week is out. Stay tuned.

Alpaca Felting Hat Class

Alpaca generate a beautiful fleece and it out scores cashmere in every aspect. Biscuit Hill B&B will be offering Alpaca felting and hat making classes starting in February 2011. The fee includes all necessary supplies and a light lunch. Class size is limited to a maximum of 6 participants. Hat colors will be the natural fleece color of the animal it came from. Color options can be: black, brown, fawn, or cream. The 1st class is February 26, 2011 from 11 am - 4 pm. Four style of hats will be available to participants. The February class fee is $95. Alpaca Boys are at Biscuit Hill B&B

Our new boys are finely here. They are still a little stressed from their trip, but are eating well. The humming you hear in the back ground is them communicating they are a little upset. We are going to keep guests outside the fenced area for about a week so they can adjust to their new place here at Biscuit Hill B&B. Here is the vedo I took right after they arrived today.

Alpaca Training Class

Dean & I spent today with our new boys, Nougat & Choco. We learned about them and their needs, and they continued their halter and lead training. They did a great job, and we know all of our guests will love giving them practice with their new skills. If Dean gets their pen finished in time, they will be in there new home here at Biscuit Hill next Wednesday, Nov. 10. We can't wait for our new additions to arrive.

Boerne Fiber Festival

The annual "Kid In Ewe" Fiber Festival is November 12, 13, & 14 at the Kendall Country Fair Grounds. Mark your calendar and come out to see how the coats of Alpacas, Lamas, and Goats are spun into yarn. There will be live animals to view, vendors selling goods made from the spun yarn, and food. Our 2 new additions will not be there, but Dean & I will. I want to start selling Alpaca yarn, and goods at Biscuit Hill B&B once we get a few months as proud owners of these beautiful animals. Dead Bank Robber Bounty

This is the first of my Texas Believe it or Not Series,and is so crazy I had to share this with you all first. During the 1920s the Texas Bankers Association started offering $5,000 to anyone that killed a bank robber. At the time banks were being robbed at a rate of 3-4 times a day. To further clarify the proclomation, they identified that they would not pay a single penny for a "live" bank robber, only "dead" bank robbers. The inherent flaws in this carte blanche retribution were many, one being that innocent men were shot on the suspect that they were the one/s that had commited the crime earlier in the day, last week or what ever. Frank Hamer, a legendary Ranger who would latter track down and ambush Bonnie and Clyde, went on record with a public press conference stating "I can' keep silent any more, I have seen too much. I know too many of the so-called 'bank robber' who have died over this state who were nothing more than pigeons, sent to their doom by grasping, dishonest men who are much worse than any of the bank robbers they profess to want to see die." This did not deter the bank association and they only reworded the reward program to include "only legally killed bank robbers". AND believe this or not, it wasn't until 1964, that the reward was quietly discontinued altogether. Only in Texas.

Kitchen Testing Again

Well everyone, I have been in the kitchen trying. yet again, to come up with even more delicious tastes to serve our guests. My newest creation is a Chocolate Fudge Brownie Bread Pudding with cherries. It is wonderful either cold or hot. I just invented it this past weekend, and it was a HIT! The next time I make it, I will get a picture to post. This new recipe my be on a future Blog Post, but not for awhile. I will start serving it every Sunday at the B&B in late Fall and throughout the Winter months. For the holidays, I will probably add a little bourbon just to spice it up a bit.

Woodrose Winery BBQ and 4th of July Fireworks show

All of our family celebrated the 4th a day early at Woodrose Winery in Stonewall Texas. (40 min from the B&B) Every year they have a BBQ and fireworks show for customers who are on their newsletter list. If you are thinking about coming to the Hill Country next year for the 4th, you may want to get on their newsletter list. I have the short version of the fireworks show here, and on our Biscuit Hill Facebook page, I have stills of the BBQ and a longer version of fireworks. A good time was held by all in attendance :-)

San Antoino's Witte Museum

A Great day trip from Biscuit Hill, to San Antonio is full of supprises. Just got back from the Witte yesterday. This museum is great for adults and kids alike. Their "Dinosaurs Unearthed" is their special attraction until September 6, 2010. Quick Visit to San Antonio

Dean & I just back from a quick shopping trip into San Antonio where we had to visit our favorite Mexican Food restuarant there, La Fagota. They have great food, the best Margaritas, Margarita Swirls, and a wonderful ambaniance. However, the best thing is that you get a Orchid with your drink. That way you can keep up with how many you have had :-) Our favorite dish is the Poco de Todo. (a little of everything) I have a picture of mine here, and there are other images on Facebook if you want to take a look.

Baby Fawn at Biscuit Hill Bed and Breakfast

A one day old baby fawn was abandoned by its mother in Cara & Matts driveway this past weekend. Cara brought "Hanna" over to Biscit Hill today since it has to be fed every 3 hours. Look for a video of Madason feeding the deer on the Biscuit Hill front porch on Facebook and UTube. The baby loves to hide in our garden after her meal.

New Recipes at Biscuit Hill B&B

Diane has been working on adding recipes to the Biscuit Hill Cookbook. Three new recipes have been developed, and the newest one will be served each Sunday at the end of breakfast over the Summer. Guests over Spring have enjoyed the trial batches of our new Lemon Ice infused with Rosemary. We serve it plain, with berries or with heavy cream. Guest's choice. Everyone that buys a cookbook over the Summer will get the new Lemon Ice recipe as well as the other two that were developed since the new year. All guests that have already purchased our cookbook will get the recipies to add to their book before they leave.

Dean & I met up with Josh & Katie, our son and daughter-in-law Saturday to enjoy a beautiful day, good food & wine, and fun music. here is a video of the band that played for the street dance. There was live music all day, but we really enjoyed this group. They are out of Austin. You may want to turn your sound down a little, I was right by their speakers when I shot this video. April Wild Flower Wine & Cheese

Johnson City is hosting a Wild Flower Festival, April 17, 2010, with both a tent with wine tasting, and a tent with micro brewery beer tasting, as well as live music all day, and Dry Comal Creek Vineyards is giving a class on Wine & Cheese pairing the same day. Wildflowers Wine & Cheese

Two major events are happening the weekend of April 16 & 17, 2010. Starting Friday thru Sunday, Johnson City is having its Wildflower Days with both wine & beer tasting tents. Fine art show and sale, live music beginning at noon on Saturday, and is capped off with a street dance Saturday night. Also, on Satruday our local vineyard Dry Comal Creek is hosting a Wine & Cheese Tour. There is a link to their website here at the Biscuit Hill Bed & Breakfast website. Lady Banks Rose In Bloom

The Lady Banks Rose that cascades over the porch entrance at Biscuit Hill is now in boom. It will bloom for the next 2 weeks. The Blue Bonnets around Canyon Lake and New Braunfels are in bloom and should be blooming for at least the next 3 weeks. Come see our blooms and all the Texas Hill Country Wild Flowers. Mountain Laural In Bloom

The March Mountain Laural are in full bloom. If you are staying at the B&B mid March thru April 1st ask about the Mountain Laural Trail. We will guide you to what will be a great use of your senses. The are beautiful and smell like grape Kool-Aid. We have a few here on our property as well. This tree is at our daughter's place. I'll try and get more images up later.

Canyon Lake will host a Willie Nelson concert at White Water Amphitheater on April 23, 2010. Tickets go on sale March 1, 2010. This Guadalupe River concert venue is a wonderful place to enjoy music as it should be enjoyed. Biscuit Hill Bed & Breakfast is a luxury lodging venue and is only 5 miles from the concert location, so book early for a great stay in the Texas Hill Country and enjoy a legend. May 8, 2009 - Gruene & Gruene Hall will host a taping of a new series "Honky Tonks & Joints" for the Travel Channel on May 8 only. Gruene Hall will be featured in the pilot as well as all the other activities around Gruene. Gruene Hall will provide a free concert in the hall for the public during the taping. Show starts at 3:30 pm. Plan to be in line a lot earlier than that if you want to be apart of this experience. All guests staying at Biscuit Hill for that weekend who request the "Travel Channel Speical" will get a complimentry bottle of wine from the Winery On The Gruene as a memento of this Travel Channel event.

Many of our guests love playing with Willie, and watching him do his tricks. Since he does not live at the B&B, guests let us know if they want to have him come over to the B&B. Willie just loves to welcome our guests, and get petted.
